Volunteer Opportunities

Milton & District Horticultural Society is run by a group of enthusiastic volunteers.  Volunteers are always in need to help on events and regular basis.  If you are interested in helping, please send your information via the Contact Us page or contact Anne Eadie, President at anneMDHS@cogeco.ca for more information.

MDHS 2019 Committee Activities, Chairs and Volunteer Opportunities

Advertising/Promotion/Communication: Creates and prints the newsletter, yearbook, etc. to ensure members are apprised of Society events.
Promotes Society events where appropriate to the public via local media and online social media including the Facebook page and website.

Awards Dinner: Arranges for the venue, manages logistics/volunteers, dinner and teardown. Set Up: Arranges for volunteers and manages the room set up. Silent Auction: Manages the donation of gifts, set up, draws and tear downs. Christmas Workshop: Arranges for venue, materials, volunteers and clean up. Awards: Collects winners names, arranges for trophy engraving and printing of certificates etc., and arranges award ceremony.

Annual Archives: Writes historic articles for the newsletter, maintains the scrapbook, adding new clippings, photos, etc. and archives to Google storage.

Fall Workshop: Liaises with DG Greenhouses to arrange for member planting of fall urns.

National Garden Day Event: Arranges for the venue, marketing; manages logistics for set up, show operation and teardown.

Garden Tour: Arranges for gardens, marketing, and day of tour volunteer coverage, signage etc. Farmers’ Market: Arranges for market participation, volunteers, organizes all requirements for market stall to promote the tour (and the Society).

Member Acknowledgement: Sends special occasion, get well cards and memorial plants etc. to members.

Meeting Refreshments: Arranges refreshments for the monthly meeting break.

Membership: Maintains an accurate membership list, collects fees, arranges for the printing/ issuing of membership cards, name tags and distributes the newsletter and email blasts.

Memorial Tree Planting: Arranges for tree to be planted and where. Arranges for day of ceremony.

Monthly Flower Shows: Manages logistics for set up, show operation and teardown. Arranges for judging, prize list and announcement. Records for Awards Dinner and yearbook

Plant Sale: Acquires plant materials, arranges for the venue, organizes, and sets up tables, markets to the public and members, arranges for plant digs, manages volunteers, arranges for donations etc.

Photo Contest: Creates the photo classes for the year, collects the entries, arranges for the judging and displaying of prize winners.

Seedy Saturday: Liaises with Landscape Ontario, sources and books speakers and venders and seed exchange. Markets to the public and members. Set up and tear down.

Speakers: Sources suitable speakers, sends speaker reminders/information etc., introduces and thanks the speaker, and ensures speakers have everything needed (e.g. power cord, projector, table, etc.).

Spring Flower Show: Arranges for the venue, marketing, manages logistics for set up, show operation and teardown. Selects the categories and classes, and prepares the prize list. Makes sure the competing classes are described in the yearbook.

Spring Workshop: Liaises with The Flower Shed to arrange for member planting of spring urns and/or window boxes.

Social Activities: Organizes 50/50 draws, draw tables and preserve/bake sale etc. Organizes any excursions. Recommends and organizes social activities.

Sunny Mount Community Garden: Responsible for liaison with the Town of Milton, renting of garden plots, communication with gardeners and collection of rental fees and ensures the efficient running of the community garden.

Volunteer Gardens: Arranges for volunteers to maintain the gardens and the purchasing of seasonal materials for the community gardens around town.
